We have recently launched the Cordova No. 8 1000 Mile Boots by Wolverine, and I just found out why they are named "Cordova", apparently it is for the leather, and that is why the hefty price, I am adding a blurb explaining why this leather is so great.

While not technically a fabric, Shell Cordovan Leather is certainly a material worthy of recognition.  The production process for Cordovan stems from a centuries old technique that originated in Córdoba, Spain.  Horween is the one of the most well known manufacturers of Shell Cordovan in the United States providing leather to Alden and Wolverine.  The method is extraordinarily time consuming, however the end result is an exceptionally beautiful and desirable product.  The raw product for Cordovan comes from the firm muscular area on a horse’s hindquarters, which is where the term “Shell” originates.  This material is cut into irregular ovals that first undergo a natural vegetable tanning process which gives Shell Cordovan its signature color.  After being tanned the leather is meticulously stained and cured by hand over several months.  This intensive treatment process is what gives the leather its trademark texture, as the leather is carefully cared for in order to ensure the right consistency.  Finally, the leather is shaved and hand polished to give an overall glossy finish to the material.

/Given the use of rare horse hide (vs bovine) and the six month production process, Cordovan is one of the most expensive leathers on the market. Yet, the extra price paid is worth it for the appearance and quality of a pair of genuine Shell Cordovan shoes.  For this reason, some of the most revered shoe manufacturers utilize Shell Cordovan. And rightfully so –  the look of this finely crafted leather out shines lower-end leathers, and makes

Product Review For Krause Men's Boots Brown by Wolverine

My father, a native midwesterner affectionately refers to 1000 Mile Boots as “farm boots,” and quite  frankly this isn’t too far from the truth.  In 1883, G.A. Krause had the idea for a work boot so durable that it could literally “give you 1,000 miles of wear,” a claim based upon the needs of the blue collar workers that surrounded him. With this goal in mind Krause opened Wolverine’s tannery and began experimenting with different leather treatments to produce the highest quality leather possible.  Eventually Wolverine developed shell horsehide, a leather that was manufactured through an intensive double tanning process that turned the hide into a soft and incredibly comfortable material. The boots also featured a stacked leather sole and hardwearing welt, ensuring the boots ability to live up to it’s name.

For decades Wolverine dominated the work boot market as a reliable and well-crafted shoe.  And then in the early twenty-first century, 1000 Mile Boots found their way into a larger market through the expanding “heritage” trend, an oft avoided term, but an appropriate one nonetheless.  When it comes to footwear “heritage” is a positive label, indicating decades of craftsmanship that make for a sturdy, durable product.  1000 Mile Boots fall perfectly into this category and so during this movement they were embraced by a whole new audience.  In keeping up with the times Wolverine began adapting and modifying their boots through minor tweaks.  Wolverine maintains what made 1000 Mile Boots revered – the supple leather, the stacked sole – and added on to this minor design details such as contrast stitching and wingtips to update the boots for a more urban, daily aesthetic
So we have recently added Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots to our product lineup and I wanted to post a recent review of the Cordovan No. 8 and get some feedback on how people like these.  We currently have alot of inventory in the different men's and women's including the collection by Samantha Pleet, Pls let us know what you think!

http://www.styleforum.net/t/205531/wolverine-721ltd-shell-cordovan-1000-mile-boot-reviewYep that's right. This is the thread where I'm going to do a long term test of the Wolverine 721LTD 1000 Mile Boot made of Horween's world famous #8 Shell Cordovan. Wolverine has produced two excellent videos about the leather used in these boots and how they are made. Both are worth watching. You can find them here. Recently Wolverine posted a press release about these boots and if you google up the 721LTD you'll find various other press releases and sneak peak reviews.

Well I'm not employed by Wolverine, some style magazine or ad agency. What I'm going to do to these boots is run them through the mill much like my other pair of 1000 Mile Boots which I have written about in other threads on this site. Still two thumbs up on those boots BTW. Just might make that 1000 mile claim of Wolverine's. Anyway let's get back to the 721LTDs shall we?

So back in the store there's this shipping container from Wolverine with my PO number on it. Oh baby it's Christmas in October for this ol' boy! I open it up and peak inside. The first thing I see is a certificate of authenticity and little card that says they are made of Horween Shell Cordovan. Under that are two black boot bags that say 1000 Mile 721 LTD Wolverine with a boot in each one. Hmmmmm this is pretty cool and a nice touch on Wolverine's part. Out comes the boots and well to say they are nice is an understatement. There's nothing like a good pair of boots or shoes in Shell Cordovan. The smell of the leather, how it looks and feels is just plain sexy. It's even better when I figure out mine are number 57 of 1000 pairs produced. I guess now you can add exotic as in there aren't many of these around into the mix of my first impressions. I like that. I looked them over and the construction is top notch as expected. Again this isn't my first pair of the made in USA 1000 Milers so I really wasn't expecting anything less than top notch quality. So out came the boot trees that Wolverine includes in the package and I laced them up and put 'em on.

Nice, very nice indeed.

For anyone who hasn't read my field test of the original 1000 Mile Boot here's what's going to happen. These boots were bought for specific types of use. Like my other pair these will be used as light hiking boots, daily shit kickers out in the pasture and for general walkabouts in the neighborhood or afield. I'm not going to baby them in any way. These boots are patterned after the original 1000 Mile boot sold in 1914. In 1914 they were marketed and sold as a premier work boot. To me this is not about fashion or following some trend. I don't give a rat's ass about either when it comes down to footwear. I need a boot that is comfortable, durable, highly water resistant and goes wherever I go without failing for years and years. Some people might think I'm nuts to beat a 700+ buck retail priced boot but IMO Wolverine never designed the original to be babyed and I doubt that's what they intended with the current release.

If anyone else who owns these wants to post pics or add comments feel free to do so.

Let the fun begin.

With the rage for ankle boots these days, I've been looking for the most comfortable and most distinctive. Well, this is certainly it! I had narrowed it down to the black-brown two-tone Addison and the Cordovan, opting for the Cordovan this time around. Is it worth spending over twice as much? Yes. while both are extremely comfortable boots straight out of the box, shell cordovan is like no other leather. Very supple and you feel great wearing them! Great stitching all over as well. Definitely will get the two-tone Addison soon, too.
Note: Buy a half size smaller than normal.
